Love, set, match: The Rolex Monte Carlo Masters 2022
One of the most prestigious tennis events is about to start. The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters 2022 is the first major tournament of the European tennis season. It takes place annually across nine days in April. This year, the event starts on Saturday, April 9 and runs through April 17 at the exclusive Monte-Carlo Country Club.
The 2022 Rolex Monte Carlo Masters marks the 115th edition of this prestigious tournament. This year the event will be particularly exciting as spectators return to the courts. The 2020 Monte-Carlo Masters was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the 2021 tournament went ahead with no spectators.

The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters 2022
Part of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category of events, some of the world’s leading male tennis players play across multiple red clay courts in the hopes of walking away with the prestigious Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters’ trophy and prize money of more than 2.5 million Euros. The tournament includes both single and doubles matches.
Last year, Stefanos Tsitsipas was crowned champion in the men’s single tournament. The men’s double champions were Nikola Mektick and Mate Pavic.
The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters has a long and illustrious history
While the tournament is considered one of the highlights on the Monaco sporting calendar, the event actually takes place in the French commune of Roquebrune Cap Martin, which borders the exclusive district of Larvotto, home to some of Monaco’s finest real estate.
The first tournament took place in 1897 in the Principality of Monaco at what was then called the Monaco Lawn Tennis, located just behind the Hotel de Paris. The inaugural tournament was won by a British player, Reggie Doherty, a four-time Wimbledon champion. In 1905, the tournament moved to a larger space in La Condamine. In 1921, a new three-court tennis club was built on a garage roof. As the tournament grew it became apparent that larger purpose-built facilities were required. Due to limited land in Monaco, the Monte-Carlo Country Club was developed in 1928, just on the border of Monaco.
The club has been developed and expanded over the years; it now boasts 11 clay courts, while the show court provides seating for 10,200 tennis fans and is named after Prince Rainier III, providing a thrilling setting for the Monte-Carlo Masters.
