Portier cove: a natural Mediterranean ecosystem in Monaco
As well as a residential area that will provide over 120 new apartments, villas, and houses, the developers behind Portier Cove are also determined that it should be a place of natural ecology. Somewhere unlike anywhere else in the Principality, where people can come to be at one with Mediterranean verdure.
PORTIER COVE: REINTRODUCING A NATURAL ENVIRONMENT INTO MONACO
Michel Desvigne, the architect in charge of the Anse du Portier project, explained: “Given the proposed dimensions, we can legitimately consider this experience as the reintroduction of a natural environment in the city.” Portier Cove, also known as Mareterra, will have a long promenade along the seafront named Promenade Prince Jacques. The developers have also set aside one hectare of land to grow naturally as a pine forest, without the need for intervention from gardeners.
Desvigne wants to establish a true Mediterranean ecosystem, offering residents and visitors a chance to enjoy this natural environment and allowing the ecosystem to flourish without human interruption. The plantlife has been carefully considered, with great care taken to arrange vegetation according to soil type, height, and slopes. This is a bold and contemporary choice for Portier Cove, Monaco, as the Principality is typically renowned for its exotic gardens. We are “favouring the evocation of the great landscape, of nature, rather than the constitution of a decor, as was done in the 19th century,” said Desvigne.
The pine forest will be formed of endemic Mediterranean species. The chosen greenery has already been cultivated for several years on a site near Monaco, with some of the trees such as the Aleppo and Umbrella pines requiring a lot of room for growth. This verdure – which is set to include over one thousand individual trees, some of which will reach 15 metres in height – will be planted in different areas of Anse du Portier.
We can’t wait to visit Mareterra’s natural gardens when the project is completed in 2025.
