Blue grotto takes shape at mareterra
The Blue Grotto project at Mareterra, Monaco, is scheduled to be completed by the end of October.Mareterra’s residents and guests will be able to peer down through an opening within the development’s caisson belt and enjoy an exceptional view of the Mediterranean Sea.
The idea for the 12-metre deep Blue Grotto came about last year, when developers decided to create a space, or “cave”, within the caissons that people can view. The Blue Grotto will be accessible via Mareterra’s coastal promenade and will allow people to truly appreciate the architectural and technical feat of the caisson belt.
Constructed in Marseille, France, the 18 water-tight caissons form a protective ring around Mareterra, holding back the Mediterranean Sea. Each concrete-filled caisson is some 26-metres tall and weighs around 10,000 tons.
The guardrails for the Blue Grotto are now in place, with developers just needing to close the “cave” with the upper slab.

A NEW ECO-DISTRICT IN THE HEART OF MONACO
Mareterra is an ambitious land reclamation project located along the coast of Monaco. The development includes luxury apartments, penthouses, townhouses, and villas, in addition to retail space and a new marina, as well as the above mentioned Blue Grotto.
In line with the principality’s ambitious plans to be carbon neutral by 2050, Marterra, formerly known as Portier Cove, includes a range of sustainable features, including solar panels, rainwater recovery systems, thermal pumps, e-bike stations and electric car charging stations. The development will also include ample green spaces filled with native flora and fauna to help encourage wildlife.
Developed by award-winning architects, Denis Valode, Renzo Piano, and Michel Desvigne Paysagiste, Mareterra is set to be completed in 2025.
