EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MONACO VILLAS

Monaco offers one of the most luxurious destinations in the world to call home, however with an area of less than one square mile, land is in exceptionally high demand. As one of the most densely populated destinations in the world, most of Monaco’s residents live in luxurious apartments. However, the world’s wealthiest often desire a Monaco villa, offering additional space and privacy above and beyond what an apartment can provide.

THE HISTORY OF MONACO’S VILLAS

The principality used to be filled with opulent belle epoque Monaco villas, homes to VIPs, celebrities, and the world’s wealthiest. However, as Monaco’s population soared and demand for precious land grew, many Monaco villas were demolished to make way for today’s modern high-rise residential buildings.

Much of this occurred during Prince Rainier III’s reign, when in 1960 he established the Monaco Economic Development Corporation to bolster the principality’s ailing economy. The influx of new investors and workers resulted in an unprecedented demand for housing. Although he later banned high-rise buildings in the 1970s, this was overturned by his successor Prince Albert II, leading to the destruction of more of Monaco’s villas. There were reportedly more than 600 Monaco villas in the 1950s; today only a small fraction of these survive.

SURVIVING MONACO VILLAS

Due to their rarity, Monaco villas are highly prized amongst the world’s elite. Once such Monaco villa, Villa Echauguette, was recently put up for auction in early 2019 for 110 million euros. Overlooking the valley Sainte Devote, the stunning pastel-pink belle epoque Monaco villa is the former family home of François Blanc, founder of the legendary Casino de Monte-Carlo. Spread over six floors, it offers a wonderful glimpse into the bygone era of Monaco villas.

Another spectacular Monaco villa is Villa du Sporting, a four bedroom, four bathroom villa that spans more than 15,700 square foot. Currently for rent with Ageprim, one of Monaco’s most exclusive real estate brokers, Villa du Sporting boasts an enviable location on the Sporting Monte Carlo Peninsula, and is arguably the most exclusive place to live in Monaco. Amongst its many spectacular features are an indoor elevator serving three levels, terrace and beach swimming pool, round infinity pool, access road and private garden filled with lush vegetation, including pines, cypresses, Atlas cedars, and tropical palm trees. If you desire a Monaco villa, there can be no more of a spectacular place to call home than Villa du Sporting.
